2010 SCT Fellow: Clarence Davis

For over 30 years, Ed has served as Deputy Director and Director of the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC) at the University of North Carolina, providing leadership to several large, multi-site clinical trials of national and international scope, whose results have changed the practice of medicine. Ed directed the coordinating center for the Lipids Research Clinics Program, which included the landmark Coronary Primary Prevention Trial showing that lowering cholesterol improved mortality. Ed also directed the coordinating center for the Studies of Left Ventricular Function (SOLVD) which showed that treatment with ace inhibitors, already popular for the treatment of hypertension, were valuable in preventing heart failure. As a Professor and Director of the CSCC he has helped to train future biostatisticians in the field of clinical trials and he has served on the data and safety monitoring boards for a number of important clinical trials. Ed has been a long-time member of the SCT and has served on the Board of Directors.
