2009 SCT Fellow: David Sackett
David Sackett has contributed to the coordination, conduct and leadership of clinical trials, methodological development, education, and promotion of a better understanding by the general public of the importance of randomized clinical trials.
David is one of three world figures who can be considered the founders of clinical epidemiology. From the time he founded, the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster through his current activities at the Trout Research & Education Centre he has trained at least two generations of clinical trialists. Two of his books have had major impact on the fields of medicine and clinical trials as a whole. His book with coauthors, Clinical Epidemiology: A Basic Science for Clinical Medicine, opened the eyes of many practicing academic and non-academic physicians that they could use their practice as basic materials for epidemiologic research. His Evidence-Based Medicine challenged the complacency of medical practice by urging physicians to base their treatment decisions on data rather than anecdote. In addition, David has written roughly 50 chapters in edited books and 250 papers, many of them dealing with randomized trials, both specific trials and methodology.
