2009 SCT Fellow: Kuang-Kuo "Gordon" Lan

Gordon Lan has made significant contribution to the theory and methods of monitoring clinical trials, and for his service to the SCT. Gordon has made many contributions to the design, monitoring and analysis of multiple clinical trials. He provided a simple yet rigorous method to compute conditional power which is now a standard in monitoring clinical trials. A second major methodology contribution was the introduction of the alpha spending function for implementing group sequential methods. This method (Lan-DeMets) relaxed the previous requirement for a fixed number of interim analyses and equally spaced increments of information by connecting this approach to the basic underlying theory of Brownian Motion. More recently, he, has co-authored a book on these methods, Statistical Monitoring of Clinical Trials – A Unified Approach. Gordon has also provided important service to the SCT including the Advisory Board for the Society’s Journal and the Board of Directors.
