2009 SCT Fellow: Frederick Ferris

Rick Ferris has contributed to the coordination, conduct, and leadership of clinical trials, methodologic development, and education about clinical trials. Rick, more than anyone, has had the greatest impact on clinical trials in ophthalmology. He was a leader in developing standardized methods for measuring visual acuity, often the primary outcome variable, in clinical trials of eye diseases. He has been the Study Chair of major trials and has served in innumerable leadership positions in other trials and on many data and safety monitoring committees. trials (e.g. Diabetic Retinopathy Study, Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study, Diabetic Retinopathy Vitrectomy Study, Age-Related Eye Disease Study, and the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network). He has also been a leader in teaching clinical trial methods in numerous courses and continues to mentor a wide variety of clinicians, epidemiologists and biostatisticians in the art and science of clinical trials and clinical research. STOP Rick Ferris has been instrumental in developing the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research Clinical Trials Education Series with the goal of increasing understanding of how to conduct a trial in ophthalmology.
