2008 SCT Fellow: Paul L. Canner
He cut his clinical trials teeth on the Coronary Drug Project. He never stopped working on that project. His first paper from the CDP was published in 1970 in JAMA and his most recent one in 2006 in the Am J Cardiol a quarter century of work! A landmark paper appeared in 1980 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
He also was key in the conduct/analysis/reporting of the CDP 15-year follow-up study that demonstrated efficacy of nicotinic acid vs. placebo the first trial evidence on long-term value of drug treatment in reducing mortality for people with coronary heart disease.
He is a quiet, modest man, dedicated both to his work and his social convictions, serious, hard-working, principled, of the highest integrity.
