2007 SCT Fellow: Barbara Hawkins
Barbara Hawkins is a tireless member of the Society since its creation and a major regular contributor to Controlled Clinical Trials. Beginning in 1980 and for the next two decades, she regularly wrote a section for the journal entitled Perusing the Literature, which was a valued resource to many of us developing ideas for trials. She has also been a leader of Coordinating Centers for several landmark clinical trials in ophthalmology, including, but not limited to, the Macular Photocoagulation Study, the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study, and the Submacular Surgery Trial. Described as the ultimate collaborator and mentor, she has facilitated the training of hundreds of junior faculty and staff. For SCT she has served on and chaired numerous SCT committees and has served as President of the Society.
